How to use the Explorer
Start by ruling things out. If overnight call is a dealbreaker, set call to “predictable hours” and see what’s left. If you know you want to work with your hands, filter for procedures. It’s easier to eliminate what doesn’t fit than to pick the perfect field on day one.
Where the scores come from
Each specialty is scored on the same dimensions as the Specialty Compass, using an editorial rubric built from Chasing Medicine and being reviewed with residents in each field. They’re generalizations: a sports medicine orthopaedist and a trauma orthopaedist live very different weeks. Use them to decide where to shadow next, not as the final word.
